Natural or roasted almonds? Here are which ones to choose

Rich in vitamins, proteins, minerals and Omega 3, the almond is a valid health ally, as well as a unique delicacy. But is it better to eat natural or roasted almonds?

Cultivated throughout the Mediterranean area, almonds are to all intents and purposes part of the Italian gastronomic offer: from Lazio tozzetti to Trapanese pesto, they always arouse the enthusiasm of adults and children, thanks to their sweet and delicate flavour.

At the end of August, just before the start of the harvest, the farmers begin to collect them, to then sell them, raw or toasted, in order to satisfy every type of taste. But when it comes to buying them, the question arises: are natural or toasted almonds better? Let's try to answer this and other questions you may ask yourself when you decide to buy almonds.

Natural or roasted almonds: which ones are better to eat?

To begin with, let's immediately clear the field of any inferences: almonds are always good for you. Rich in protein and fiber, but low in carbohydrates, almonds have a high nutritional, energy and satiating level, which make them the ideal snack even for those who have to follow a diet.

For almonds, the same principle applies as for all other foods: the less processing they undergo, the better. This means that eating raw almonds, therefore natural, is the best way to take full advantage of the health-promoting properties of this nut. On the other hand, let's dispel the myth that consuming toasted almonds is bad: toasted almonds are actually more digestible. Thanks to the high temperature used for roasting, in fact, micro-fractures are created inside the seed, which favor the action of gastric juices, avoiding weighing on digestion.

In short, as you can see, there is no single answer. What is certain is that the taste of toasted almonds is unsurpassed!

Is it bad to eat almonds in their skins?

The answer to this question is only one and it is clear as day: far from it! Most of the almonds' nutrients are contained in the thin skin that surrounds the fruit: tannins, phenolic acids and flavonoids not only guarantee an effective antioxidant action, but also possess important anti-inflammatory properties, capable of fighting colds, flu and even cold sores.

Furthermore, the fiber contained in the peel improves intestinal functions and helps to increase the sense of satiety, an indispensable factor for those who follow a low-calorie diet.

How many almonds a day?

Almonds have no contraindications, therefore they can be included in the everyday diet. Perfect as a snack, they are an excellent substitute for snacks and pre-packaged snacks, but in any case you shouldn't go overboard.

Almonds, whether natural or toasted, still contain carbohydrates, so for a healthy adult it can be said that the ideal quantity is represented by about 15/20 almonds a day, which are approximately equivalent to 30/35 gr .

Is it possible to toast almonds at home?

Absolutely yes! If it is true that it is possible to toast almonds in the microwave or in a pan, it is equally true that the oven remains the best option. 15 minutes at 180° will be enough to have your almonds toasted to perfection!
